ECONOMY OF MOMBASA

The main economic activity in Mombasa is tourism which contributes more than half of the total gross income of the region. It is the most visited place along east Africa and continues to be a magnet for visitors because of its fantastic beaches, rich cultural history and natural sights among others. TOURISM

Tourism plays an important role in the economy of Mombasa. It is the main source of income and contributes more than half of the total gross income. TRADE

As early as 15th century Mombasa was a leading center for long distance trade. Its trade links went as far as India and modern day china. The main items of trade included spices, gold and ivory. Slave trade was also dominant but the main source of income was ivory trade. The strategic location of city was a key node in trading networks across India ,Persia and Yemen. Mombasa today remains trading center where traders from all parts of the world meet to transact business. The presence of a good harbor has also boosted trade in the region which facilitates much of export and import trade. It is also characterized by presence of many markets which offer a bright, fun, and unforgettable shopping experience to many visitors. There are also a large number of vendors in the open air markets who sell hand made crafts, jewelry, carvings and traditional clothing.

DEEP SEA FISHING

Mombasa is also a center for deep sea fishing. It is not commercially practiced activity but plans are underway to make use of this underwater treasure by provision of modern fishing facilities. This will in turn create employment to the locals who can now earn a living from this activity thus improving there living standards. Although fishing is not a new activity in Mombasa, it is yet to take root in this region.

FARMING

This is another economic activity practiced in Mombasa. It is the third largest economic activity in Mombasa after tourism and trade. The climate along the coastal region is very conducive for agriculture .There are two main rain seasons; during March and October. The main crops which are grown in this area include coconuts, palm trees, cashew nuts and sisal among others. A sisal plantation is a common feature in the area and is the main cash crop which is exported to Canada.

Mombasa has recorded a slight, progressive, Economic growth over the last five years. This can be directly linked to growth in the tourism sector as a result of modern hotels being developed daily in the area and efficient transport system. It is becoming a fascinating and cosmopolitan coastal city.

Majestic Mombasa as some call, it is one of the oldest cities in east Africa. It is a prolific city situated on the Indian Ocean that has lots of history and culture to offer. Mombasa is a result of a series of invasions by many trading nations who sought to impose their dominance on it and has switched hands several times all through its history. This brought about a significant influence on its culture and religion but the Arab influence has been prominent in the town for a number of years. Its strategic location along the Indian Ocean made it a center of long distance trade .Arab traders could sail around the Kenya coast as early as 13th century and this boosted the trade greatly along the coast. The city today is covered by markets that have been in existence for as many as hundred years back. These markets are very charming attractions sights and give travelers a true taste of Mombasa.

It is also a place widely known among visitors as the ideal place to buy traditional Kenyan crafts like sculptures, handmade wooden furniture and tools. Visitors are also attracted to the unique traditional kanga clothes of coastal residents which are common items in the markets. Kitenges are a colorful clothes designed specifically for women while kikois are for men. These are common in east Africa coast and are worn as a wrap around a garment. They are best suited for beaches where they are used as beach towels. They are traditionally produced from local fabrics and sold cheaply to the market. Jewelry is also common in the markets and is very popular with tourists. The markets are mainly dominated by Indian traders although there are other smaller traders like Arabs. There are also numerous boutique shops which deal with paintings, modern art items and traditional clothing.

CLIMATE OF MOMBASA

Mombasa town enjoys a favorable climate all the time. It has a warm tropical climate which is typical along the coastal region of East Africa. The climate is moderate as compared to other countries within the tropical belt which experience a milder climate. This kind of climate has been a very crucial element in the growth of Mombasa tourism sector. Although the climate of Mombasa is very conducive, Mombasa is prone to climate related disasters like floods due to its proximity to the Indian Ocean.

The climate of Mombasa is mainly influenced by monsoon winds which blow across the Indian Ocean. This wind brings about the four seasons. There are two types of monsoon winds mainly the kaskazi wind and kusi wind. The kaskazi is north-easterly and is experienced from the month of October to march .It gives rise to the summer season which is records the highest temperatures. The kusi wind is a cold wind which brings about light and occasional rains starting from May until June. Monsoon winds also bring about a cool breeze that flows from the Indian Ocean all the time giving tourists a wonderful experience.

Mombasa experiences moderate temperature throughout the year. The hottest months are December to April with temperatures going as high as 31°C in a given day. July and August are the coolest months with temperature of 27°C .Generally; the weather is a bit hot regardless of the area you are in as compared to other parts of the country. The good news about Mombasa is that the temperatures don’t vary significantly and are fairly stable all the time.
The rainiest period in Mombasa is between April and May with heavy down pours being experienced in the afternoon. The rainfall is minimal during the month of January to February after which the normal sunny season resumes. The rain season does not mean necessary heavy rainfall and in some cases it may be just light showers. The rainfall is caused by monsoon winds which blow across the Indian Ocean.
